There’s nothing quite like seeing someone you care about find their passion, something that truly lights them up.
Watching my son take up rock climbing has been such a joy. He’s a natural—scaling the wall like he’s been doing it his whole life. At ten years old, he’s already setting his sights on the Olympics.
One day, while waiting during his team practice, I felt the pull of a “why not now?” moment. I asked my son to show me the ropes—literally. He shrugged and said, “There isn’t much to it. You just climb.” I couldn’t help but laugh as I asked, “Really? Don’t you learn special techniques or something in your practices? What do your coaches teach you?” He just looked at me, a little wiser than his years, and replied, “You just do it.”
I’ve been convincing myself year by year that certain things are behind me. But something in his simple, confident response made me pause. So, I laced up my climbing shoes, faced the wall, and went for it. What really caught me off guard as I climbed was how much I tend to underestimate my own strength, how I often talk myself out of trying new things, and how much I worry I won’t know the right technique or be capable enough.
But at that moment, I learned that sometimes, the only technique we need is to take that first step, push past doubts, and go for it. Because the truth is, we’re stronger than we think, and the only way to find that inner strength is to just do it.
